Show of support at UKRC for tighter regulation of teleradiology services
More than 80% of visitors to the Medica stand at UKRC believe that teleradiology should be regulated.
The poll was taken as part of a Join The Debate theme on the stand which featured live panel discussions (broadcast to a large screen on the outside of the stand), themed ‘pods’ where people could vote on the big issues of the day and a live blogpoint where visitors could make instant contributions.
During the broadcast debates, consultant radiologists Peter Mayer and Tom Naunton-Morgan expressed concern that patient images from the UK could be reported on by non-FRCR radiologists in other countries.
Dr Erika Denton, the Department of Health’s National Clinical Lead for Diagnostic Imaging, visited the stand to watch one of the debates but was unable to take part as rules do not allow senior people to make public comments during the first three months of a new Government.
“Many of the people who came on to our stand were horrified that teleradiology was not already regulated”, said Simon Rasalingham, Medica’s Chief Executive.
“More than 1,400 people voted on our topics which is fantastic result. The whole point of our Join The Debate initiative is to reflect professional opinion and drive up standards”.
On other issues, 74% of visitors agreed that visiting sonographers should be NHS-trained, just 55% felt that they had the resources to hit the new stroke and cancer targets and 67% agreed with the proposal that “radiology on the cheap” was a potential safety issue.

Notes for Editors
MEDICA
The Medica Group partners more than 70 NHS Trusts across the country and today operates the largest remote radiology reporting network in the UK.
Its consultant radiologists report on patient scans derived from X-Ray, MRI, CT, Ultrasound and other medical technologies.
Each consultant is equipped at home with a state-of-the-art PACS (Picture Archiving and Communications System) workstation. Connecting directly into the secure RIS (Radiology Information System) at the hospital where the patient was scanned, consultants provide both verbal and detailed written reports on the scans they have received. These essential reports enable doctors at the hospital to determine the best course of treatment for their patients.
