Protocol-driven imaging strikes a chord with on-call radiologists
A forest of hands went up at the Royal Society of Medicine when consultant radiologists were shown an image and asked if it reminded them of their experience of being on-call.
This image was of a dam bursting - and Medica CEO Simon Rasalingham was using it to explain that using high quality UK remote radiology reporting services can help prevent the dam from bursting.
His talk ‘Protocol-driven imaging - an opportunity to manage your on-call?’was well received by delegates at the Medica-sponsored meeting on ‘Hot Topics in Radiology that affect you!’
Mr Rasalingham said that a significant increase in demand for ultra-fast access to reporting had been created by:
- A&E waiting times
- Pressure to implement the NICE head injury guidelines
- National Stroke Strategy targets
- The “referral-to-treatment” target of two weeks for Imaging, by June 2009
Turnaround of not just verbal but fully authorised electronic RIS reports back to clinicians by trusted UK Consultants Radiologists is therefore crucial, he added. Medica’s CT Nighthawk service was providing an on-call service with a median report turnaround time of less than 23 minutes and the service was in use at over 50 NHS Trusts across the UK.
Other speakers at the meeting, held at the RSM headquarters in Wimpole Street, were Dr Jane Adam, London Chair of RCR Standards Committee Revalidation, re-registration and re-certification: ‘How to do it’ for the jobbing radiologist; Dr Giles Maskell, Registrar of College, Royal Cornwall Hospital Difficult doctors and doctors in difficulty; Dr Liam McKnight, Morriston Hospital Swansea Tooke, training, committee reports and MTAS: Getting it right second time?; Dr Paul Dubbins, Derriford Hospital Plymouth Imaging in the Darzi era: Can Darzi's workforce proposals lighten our load?; Dr Michael Creagh, St Peters Hospital and Dr Alf Troughton, Swindon Rota construction and constructive rotas: finding the rota that's best for you and Dr Paul Ignotus, Kent and Sussex Hospital Is the NHS holding us back?
