Ultra-fast Dayhawk service launched at UKRC
Dayhawk, an ultra-fast daytime remote reporting service, was formally launched on the opening day of UKRC in Manchester.
In a ceremony on the Medica stand, Dr Andy Bacon, Associate Director of Commercial Reform & Reconfigurations at NHS North West, cut the ribbon to launch a radiology service that is widely seen as providing a safety net for hard-pressed hospitals.
Dr Bacon, who the following day presented a paper entitled 'Commissioning effective imaging services', was joined on the stand by Medica’s Simon Rasalingham (Chief Executive), Bob Harper (Chief Operating Officer), Medica staff and UKRC delegates.
Dayhawk is a remote On-Call Emergency Reporting service which provides ultra-fast turnround. Part of Medica’s nationwide network of remote radiology reporting services, it provides invaluable support for NHS Acute Trusts and the National Stroke Strategy.
All the radiologists who support the service are UK-based and practising FRCR consultants.
“The service guarantees 30 minutes turnaround from receipt of exam to entry of the report into the Trust’s information system at any time of day”, said Mr Rasalingham.
“The service is particularly supportive of the National Stroke Strategy which gives a three-hour target for scanning and reporting”.
According to Ann Keen, Parliamentary under-Secretary for Health, on average someone in England suffers a stroke every five minutes. Each year about 11,500 stroke victims are admitted to hospital in London, 16 per cent. of whom die as a result of their stroke.
“Massive organisational and financial benefits and improvements to patient care can result from providing a radiologist’s report immediately after examination completion”, added Mr Rasalingham.
MEDICA also provides Nighthawk, an out-of-hours service and On Demand which helps Trusts to tackle backlogs, meet targets and keep on top of their plain-film reporting.
