“We have a very, very busy radiology department here and, like many departments around the country, no matter how hard we worked we could not make inroads into the backlog. We have had to adopt a range of solutions to reducing the waiting time for scans.

“I must say, MEDICA's consultants were first-class – all were experienced UK-trained and practising Fellows of the Royal College of Radiologists so that gives you confidence straight away. They happily worked with our systems and ran the clinics very well.”

Demand for Ultrasound set to increase

The pressure on non-obstetric ultrasound is already significant in hospitals up and down the country and current developments indicate that the use of the modality is predicted to grow rapidly in the immediate future.

The increasing sophistication and capability of ultrasound systems has led to its increasing use in cardio-vascular and musculo-skeletal diagnostics.

Meanwhile, the bulk of the work fast-tracked under the one-week cancer referral target introduced in 2009 is already being handled by ultrasound and chest X-Ray.

Looking ahead to radiology in the next 10 years, Dr Erika Denton, the Department of Health’s National Clinical Lead for Diagnostic Imaging has predicted that doctors will use ultrasound as commonly as they now use stethoscopes.

“Ultrasound is the 21st century diagnostic tool”, says Dr Denton.

The MEDICA On-Demand Ultrasound service provides hospitals with a consultant-led team of experienced sonographers working flexibly and running out-of-hours clinics, if required, to efficiently tackle backlogs and ultrasound pressure points.

Using UK-accredited clinical professionals to cover all ultrasound services from routine to more complex scans, MEDICA OnDemand Ultrasound offer a complete gold standard fully-audited service.
